Hiperkes merupakan penggabungan dari higiene perusahaan dan Kesehatan Kerja. Higiene perusahaan (higiene industri, higiene okupasi, higiene kerja) (industrial-occupational hygiene) adalah spesialisasi dalam ilmu higiene beserta prakteknya yang lingkup dedikasinya adalah : mengenali, mengukur, dan melakukan penilaian (evaluasi) terhadap faktor penyebab gangguan kesehatan atau penyakit dalam lingkungan kerja dan perusahaan. Hasil pengukuran dan evaluasi demikian dipergunakan sebagai dasar tindakan korektif serta guna pengembangan pengendalian yang lebih bersifat preventif terhadap lingkungan kerja/perusahaan. Adapun Kesehatan Kerja adalah spesialisasi dalam ilmu kesehatan/kedokteran beserta prakteknya yang bertujuan agar pekerja/masyarakat pekerja memperoleh derajat kesehatan sebaik-baiknya (dalam hal dimungkinkan; bila tidak, cukup derajat kesehatan yang optimal), fisik, mental, emosional, maupun sosial, dengan upaya promotif, preventif, kuratif, dan rehabilitatif terhadap penyakit/gangguan kesehatan yang diakibatkan oleh pekerjaan dan/atau lingkungan kerja, serta terhadap penyakit pada umumnya.
Pentingnya sertifikasi kesehatan kerja atau hiperkes bagi dokter dan perawat perusahaan diatur pemerintah melalui PERMENAKERTRANS No. 01 tahun 1976 tentang Wajib Latih Hiperkes bagi dokter perusahaan dan PERMENAKERTRANS No. 01 tahun 1979 tentang wajib Latih Hiperkes bagi paramedis ( Perawat dan Bidan) perusahaan.
